How to write a best man speech that actually lands
By Clara Voice ยท May 2026 ยท 5 min read
The best man speech is one of the most watched, most judged and most remembered moments of any wedding. Get it right and you are a legend. Get it wrong and people talk about it for years โ for the wrong reasons.
The 7 things every great best man speech has
- A strong opening line โ not "for those who don't know me." Start with a story, a joke, or a bold statement.
- One or two genuine stories โ specific, real, funny or touching. Not a list of things you did together.
- Something kind about the bride โ the room wants to see you welcome her warmly.
- A moment of genuine feeling โ one honest, unguarded sentence hits harder than five funny ones.
- A proper toast โ not just "raise your glasses." A real final line that earns the applause.
- The right length โ 4 to 6 minutes maximum. Every minute over that, you lose the room.
- Rehearsal โ read it out loud at least 5 times. It sounds completely different spoken versus read.
The 3 mistakes that ruin best man speeches
The number one mistake: embarrassing stories the groom finds funny but his new in-laws absolutely do not. Know your audience.
- Going too long โ the funniest speech in the world becomes painful at 12 minutes.
- Reading word for word โ look up from your notes. Eye contact with the couple makes the room feel it.
- Winging it โ "I'll figure it out on the day" is how speeches become disasters. Write it. Practice it.
The secret weapon nobody talks about
The speeches that make people cry and then immediately laugh โ the ones people remember 10 years later โ all have one thing in common. They are specific. Not "he's a great guy." But "the time he drove three hours in the rain to help me move a sofa, said nothing about it, and never mentioned it again." Specificity is what turns a speech into a memory.
